CHAOS (Kardia Chronicles #1)
by Christine O'Neil

Publishing date:
August 19th 2013
Publisher: Entangled Teen Ember

Amazon

Book Description:
My name is Maggie Raynard. After sixteen years being just plain me, suddenly, when I lose my temper, my fingers become weapons of mass destruction. Turns out I'm a semi-god, descended from Aphrodite. Sounds cool in theory, but when I accidentally put my ex-boyfriend in a coma, things go downhill pretty fast.

Now some new guy named Mac Finnegan has made it his mission in life to continually piss me off. I'm stuck learning how to use my new powers while also dealing with regular high school problems, and with this annoying—and super-hot—guy all up in my business, I'm about to flip out.

But it gets worse. I just learned there's this watchdog council of semis who keeps an eye out for any bad apples. They think I'm the baddest of the bunch and want to take me out before I do any more damage. My nemesis Mac might turn out to be my salvation, only he's got secrets of his own...and they may just kill us both.

Christine O'Neil was born and raised in Connecticut, where she spent most of her childhood outdoors catching salamanders, frogs and colds. When she wasn't terrorizing Mother Nature, she was curled up under the covers with her nose in a book. As an adult, she's stopped stalking amphibians, but still loves books. When she isn't reading, she likes to spend her time people-watching. In fact, she's probably watching you RIGHT NOW O_O She's also pretty obsessed with writing YA books, but if she had to pick another profession she would be a ninja...or a Professor of the Dark Arts. Christine also writes adult romance under the pen name Christine Bell.

Publisher: Entangled Teen Ember

Book Description:
Jessie Darker goes to high school during the day, but at night she helps with the family investigation business. Cheating husbands and stolen inheritances? They’re your girls—but their specialty is a bit darker. Zombie in your garage? Pesky Poltergeist living in your pool? They’ll have the problem solved in a magical minute. For a nominal fee, of course...

When gorgeous new client, Lukas Scott, saunters into the office requesting their help to find a stolen box, it sounds like a simple case—until the truth comes out. The box is full of Sin.

Seven deadly ones, in fact.

They’ve got five days to recapture the Sins before they're recalled by the box, taking seven hijacked human bodies with them. Easy peasy—except for one thing...

There’s a spell that will allow the Sins to remain free, causing chaos forever. When the key ingredient threatens the life of someone she knows, Jessie must make the ultimate choice between love and family—or lose everything.

JUS ACCARDO spent her childhood reading and learning to cook. Determined to follow in her grandfather’s footsteps as a chef, she applied and was accepted to the Culinary Institute of America. At the last minute, she realized her path lay with fiction, not food, and passed on the spot to pursue writing. Jus is the bestselling author the popular Denazen series from Entangled publishing. A native New Yorker, she lives in the middle of nowhere with her husband, three dogs, and sometimes guard bear, Oswald.

First of all, welcome to Anatea's Bookshelf, Christine. We're happy to have you here!

1. Can you tell us something about yourself?

Hmmm, let’s see…OH! I can write a limerick around a person’s first or last name in three minutes or less. I wish that was a skill that had any value at all, but there it is.

2. What inspired you to be a writer?
When I went back to college as an adult (in my early thirties), I really fell in love with writing and learning again. My English professors were all very encouraging and supportive of my writing, and gave me the confidence to pursue publication.

3. Do you have a favorite author or a book?
Yes.
Wait, do you want me to tell you who and what they are, or are you going to try to guess? *crickets* Tell you? Okay, the thing is, my favorite book changes pretty regularly, depending on my mood. Sometimes it’s Stardust by Neil Gaiman. Sometimes it’s Sharp Objects by Gillian Flynn. Sometimes it’s The Goblet of Fire (do I even need to name the author?:OD) Sometimes it’s a relatively unknown book called The Ten Ruby Trick by Julia Knight. For authors, it varies, but for the sake of keeping it short, I’ll go with the author who give me the most bouts of line-envy while I’m reading, and that’s Gillian Flynn. LOVE her.

4. Can you tell us a little bit more about Chaos?
Well, Chaos is book one of the Kardia Chronicles series, which is anticipated to be three-books. It’s about a girl names Maggie Raynard who has found out that she’s a semi-god (so like a demigod, only more diluted because it’s generations away rather than the child of a god directly) descended from the goddess Aphrodite. She’s having a rough time of it, because her new powers have caused her to do some very bad things. Her mom has written off the semi life all together and won’t help and there’s this new guy at school, Mac Finnegan, who keeps messing with her and she doesn’t know why. Here’s the blurb:
My name is Maggie Raynard. After sixteen years being just plain me, suddenly, when I lose my temper, my fingers become weapons of mass destruction. Turns out I'm a semi-god, descended from Aphrodite. Sounds cool in theory, but when I accidentally put my ex-boyfriend in a coma, things go downhill pretty fast.

Now some new guy named Mac Finnegan has made it his mission in life to continually piss me off. I'm stuck learning how to use my new powers while also dealing with regular high school problems, and with this annoying--and super hot—guy all up in my business, I'm about to flip out.

But it gets worse. I just learned there's this watchdog council of semis who keep an eye out for any bad apples. They think I'm the baddest one in the bunch and want to take me out before I do any more damage. My nemesis Mac might turn out to be my salvation, only he's got secrets of his own...and they may just kill us both.

5. How did you come up with a concept for Chaos?
This book was actually a collaboration between me and my editor and publisher at Entangled, Liz Pelletier. She was looking for someone to write a book based on an idea she had and put out a call to authors, asking them to write and submit a sample chapter in their best YA voice. Then, she planned to pick one of the authors to work with on her story concept. 156 of us sent in writing samples, and a week later, she called me, SUPER excited about the scene I sent her. She loved it so much, she wanted to contract my story immediately. So we took the little kernel of an idea I had written, and sat on the phone until around 2 a.m. brainstorming and world building around that scene. What we ended up was a loose outline for Chaos (and the rest of the Kardia Chronicles series). It was literally one of the most exciting and fun creative experiences of my life!

6. How many books will be in Kardia Chronicles?
Three.

7. Have you already started working on the sequel?
Yes! And outlining book three as well.

8. And for the end, can you tell us your favorite quote?
From the book or just in general? I’ll give you one of each! My favorite quote in life is this one by Martin Luther King Junior. It resonates with me so deeply every time I read it:
I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character.

And as for my favorite quote in the book, that’s a little tougher. I have a lot of lines that I think are really funny, but I like this one most because it shows Maggie’s very first impression of Mac: “His face was beautiful. The kind of face with the power to make even a seriously badass girl start scribbling her first name next to his last name in the margins of all her notebooks."
